INGIBJÖRG

Ingibjörg is a Swedish artist of both Icelandic and Tunisian descent. Her Icelandic roots run through a matriarchal line shaped by music, art, architecture and literature.

Her grandmother, Halldóra Briem, became Iceland’s first female architect and was also the fourth generation of women composers in a lineage unique in Iceland. She wrote poetry as well. Halldóra was very close to her granddaughter and gave her a strong connection to her Icelandic heritage.

Ingibjörg carries the name of her grandmother’s sister, who died in infancy. Through the name, her memory lives on – missir, nærvera: loss and presence.

Her relationship with Iceland is part of  a lifelong connection to her origins. She is connected to the country through heritage and family history, while seeing it from a life shaped elsewhere. The Archaic art series grew from this profound relationship – from the landscape, the heritage and the elemental. Made across Iceland in fierce winds and harsh conditions, Archaic demanded endurance – yet revealed stillness.
